How Does the Optomap Work?
The patient places their eye up to the instrument and the doctor's assistant positions the patient and takes the scan. The Optomap captures its image in only 1/4 of a second.
The assistant takes two scans and evaluates the images. If the images look good the same procedure is repeated on the second eye. The scanned digital image is sent immediately to your doctor for viewing.
For Whom is the Optomap Recommended?
Almost everyone is a good candidate for the Optomap Eye Wellness Screening. This new technology offers improved views of the inside lining of the eye. A further benefit is having baseline documentation to monitor for changes in the future.
Is Optomap Better Than Dilation?
The Optomap Retinal Exam is a great tool to use in addition to dilation or when a patient can't or doesn't want to be dilated.
The best method to examine the inner lining of the eye is to dilate the pupils and examine the retina with a special lens and additionally perform an Optomap Retinal Scan to view the image as a whole.
Your doctor will discuss with you the benefits and most appropriate method of examination for you.
Is There a Cost for the Optomap Retinal Scan?
The Optomap scan is $32 when performed as a screening procedure. This fee is not covered by insurance plans.
Another use of the Optomap technology is to confirm and document medical retinal pathology; this procedure may be covered by your medical insurance carrier.
